Confusion erupts in Senate chambers…Lawmakers adjourn prematurely
The Plenary of
the Liberian Senate Tuesday adjourned prematurely owing to a confusion which
erupted amongst members of the senate regarding the adoption of that august
body agenda for deliberations.
The Standing Rules of the Senate mandate
senators to convene for regular Tuesday and Thursday session from 10:00am to
2:00pm with provision for extension.
Some members
of the senate had suggested that major forestry concession agreements be placed
on the agenda for debate and subsequent ratification. But other senators argued
that the concession agreements should not form part of the agenda on grounds
that the community rights law that should necessitate passage of the forestry
concession agreements is yet to be passed into law.
This led to
the confusion as the senators could not generally agree on the adoption of the
agenda for deliberations as result of this agreement over the inclusion of the
forestry agreements on the agenda.
Efforts by
Senate President Pro Tempore Cletus Wortorson to quell the confusion failed due
to the insistence of majority of members of the senate that the agenda can not
be adopted in the wake of the inclusion of the concession agreements on the
agenda.
As the confusion persisted, Grand Bassa County
Senior Senator Gbehzohngar Findley made a rare motion for adjournment; a motion
that can not be debated once it is seconded. Thereafter, the lawmakers
prematurely adjourned and the work of the Liberian was cancelled Tuesday.
